The addiction of running!

Info from: http://www.medicinenet.com/running/page2.htm

There's a bug about running that you catch. It could be the exhilaration of propelling your body through space, or the pounding on the ground that sends sensation up your bones all the way to the pleasure centers in your brain, or it could simply be the sheer satisfaction of having done something good for yourself. Whatever it is, running can be addictive. The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi might describe the experience of running as "flow," the state of mind in which you are fully immersed in what you are doing. Or it could be what William Glasser calls, "positive addiction," where you perform a repetitive activity without self-criticism or judgment that has a beneficial effect on your mind and body.

This really is so true! Almost everyone I know that runs on a fairly regular basis, seems addicted or at least semi-addicted. It's funny how something that so many people hate, can be something so great for others. I think I enjoy running for several reasons. One of those is the fact that it's one of the only times in a week that there are so distractions and i'm completely alone. I gather my thoughts and can think through situations that are going on in my life. It's also something competitive for me. I can push myself at something that I consider difficult. If you don't think you enjoy running, I challenge you to go for a run in a nice neighborhood without an ipod. Don't have any time frame or mileage that you want to complete. It actually can be relaxing and nice when you don't add a lot of other things to it. You'll see that it's not that bad, and maybe even enjoyable. :)
